Remembering My Dad (E249)
Remembering My Dad
My father passed away 15 years ago this week. I just can’t believe that, uh, 15 years have passed since he was gone. I was very close to my dad, uh, especially in the two years prior to his passing. And, I’m truly grateful that I had a relationship with my dad, despite, uh, the complexities. We had our differences over the years, mainly concerning his, excessive drinking, and, uh, that created some distance between us, but beyond that, uh, we generally loved each other and were in many ways great friends.
I truly miss my dad. I miss, his daily phone calls, I miss his Sunday visit, and I just miss talking to him about, and everything that we used to talk about. I wasn’t there when my dad actually passed and took his final breath, but I was the one who arrived shortly after to close his eyes, to be with him one last time, to say goodbye. And that moment will stay with me forever. And I will talk more about my dad in the upcoming segment of this program.
I cherished my relationship with my dad. I never took it for granted. While I’m very grateful for my relationship with my dad, I know that it’s not everyone’s reality. For many people, the bond with their parents or their children never happened. Estrangement is a deeply painful and often hidden issue that affects families and its members. I’m not here to, try to figure it out, why kids do not speak to their parents or vice versa. Each family has a different circumstance, different reality, and they deal with it alternate and different methods.
But I’m here to tell you that if your parents are still alive and you have a relationship with them, cherish it, protect it, and even sterilize it if you can. Don’t let anything disturb it. Treasure every moment with your parents. Treat them with love, with open communication and patience to understand them, because one day they may no longer be here.
So, right now all of you are here, and I got a great compilation for you tonight, a lot of stories that you will enjoy. Stay with me for the next couple of hours.
