Broadcasting from the South Pacific (E244)
Broadcasting from the South Pacific
I am usually either recording this program or delivering it live from the comfort and the warmth of my studio at home, but this time I am truly far away across the world somewhere in the South Pacific in the island of New Zealand. Yes, New Zealand. I never thought I’m going to be here, but here I am. And I was not sure if I’m able to deliver this program of East to West live, but in case there is problem with the internet, which has been very spotty for the last couple of days, so I’ve decided that at least the opening of this program I will pre-record.
And if I see that it is possible for me to deliver the entire program live, I will do so. I have tested the live broadcast and it was interrupted and the way it’s interrupted is that whatever you are listening to all of a sudden fade out and another music, let’s say Michael Bublé or Michael Franti, will come up. And if so, you know that you are not listening to me live anymore. So you may be hearing this program live or you may listen to it on demand as you usually are. So being here in the middle of the ocean, I remember that many years ago there was a pirate radio ship that off the coast of Israel run by the peace activist by the name of Abie Nathan and he had one of Israel’s most popular radio station at the time called The Voice of Peace. And they broadcasted somewhere in the Mediterranean. That radio station was one of my favorite radio station at the time. They broadcasted in three languages: Arabic, Hebrew, and English, somewhere in the Mediterranean. And the whole idea that it’s a pirate ship that is off the territorial water of Israel, that was a huge, huge massive appeal to many of us at that time.
Abie Nathan was a peace activist that landed his aircraft Peace 1 in Egypt trying to make peace with Egypt at that time. So it was before 1976, somewhere in the mid-70s, I would say. And then I remembered a favorite movie of mine, Pirate Radio, and Pirate Radio was again about a pirate ship off the territorial water of United Kingdom at the time and I’m not sure if it was a real story or not, but it was also a ship that broadcasted. So I feel exactly like those two, Abie Nathan and Pirate Radio at the time. So tonight’s broadcast is totally broadcasted from somewhere in the South Pacific in the middle of the ocean and I hope you enjoy the vibe, I hope you enjoy the music and stay with me for the next couple of hours.”
