Seasons of Change
Seasons of Change
Almost without noticing, earlier this week, the summer officially ended, and the fall begun. The autumn. At least over here, in New England. I know that some part of the country, and in Israel, and Europe, there is not really an autumn season. But here in New England, we feel it. We feel the distinct difference between all four seasons.
Changing of the seasons is one type of change that we have no control over. But yet, it happened, and it happened effortlessly. Everything is changing, and it might be the one thing that is always constant: change. People change, relationships change, our bodies change, hey, our priorities change, and the entire world around us changes. And yet, most of us don’t like change very much. Yes, we get very comfortable in our comfort zone. We know our routine, we know our people, we have our customs, and we hope that we know what tomorrow brings. And then, something changes. And our first reaction is often, “Wait a minute, I wasn’t ready for that,” or as the book said, “Who Moved My Cheese?”
Nature, by the way, don’t have a problem with changing. The days are getting shorter. The light is changing. The morning feels different, like specifically this morning. And soon, the green leaves will become to turn yellow and orange, and it’s beautiful right here in the Northeast. And then, without an argument, without a meeting of the board, without a committee deciding whether it’s time or not, the leaves will fall.
A book that I read many, many years ago by Deepak Chopra, called The Seven Spiritual Law of Success, and one of the laws is the Law of Least Effort. I’m not going to get into the principle itself, but it gives you the analogy of least effort. The tree doesn’t fight to hold on to every leaf. It just let go. And the winter comes, and everything is quite bare and cold. And when the time is right, spring arrives, and new leaves appear on the trees effortlessly.
And I think there is a lesson in that, something we can learn. We spend so much time trying to hold on to things that have already changed and moved on, whether it’s people, relationship, jobs, and even old versions of ourselves. And sometimes, the hardest part of change isn’t the change itself, it’s just letting go.
Think about your own life and the changes that you have resisted throughout, oh, let’s say, the last five years. Most of those eventually become turning points: a new job, a move, a relationship, a goodbye and hello, or yes or no. Sometimes we only understand the meaning of change years later.
And then, there is music. Music changes. Artists change. Sounds change. The way we listen and consume music changes. However, music always stays. Yeah, one song can take you back to a beautiful summer forty years ago, and another can bring you back to a winter, a person, a feeling that you had. The world changed, you change, but the song stayed. And maybe that’s why we need music when life is changing. It gives us something familiar while we move forward, and adapt, and get used to the change.
So tonight, as we enter another autumn, we will talk about change. The changes we choose, the changes that we resist, and the changes we never saw coming. And we will let the music take us through few seasons. As always, what we do during the autumn season, I will bring you one version of the Autumn Leaves, or Les Feuilles Mortes in French, along with incredible compilation and lineup of songs. Stay with me for the next couple of hours.
